HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

One of my favorite days of the year!
It reminds me of being a kid, dressing up and driving around to the neighbors (I lived in the country) where everyone gave out full size candy bars and you could always count on a popcorn ball and fudge from Mrs. DeBryan up the road.

Then we would head into town so I could go with my friend Bob Ann.

I remember one year being a pumpkin and not fitting in the car, so I had to dress up in my moms old bathrobe and go as a housewife.

Pretty sure the word Housewife is unacceptable now.

You’d never get away with this costume in Northern Wisconsin.

I remember plenty of years that I had to wear a snowsuit over my outfit, which really takes away from the dramatic affect.

Love the old school pumpkin buckets. They pack such a nostalgic punch!

We have a gang of people coming over tonight to eat chili and mob the neighborhood.

I can’t even remember who all I invited, but I know we will have fun

May your pumpkin buckets be heavy on Snickers bars and light on Sour Patch Kids….

Happy Tricks or Treats to all!

Except that scary lady in the Goldilocks costume.

Wouldn’t want to meet her in a dark alley……

I love Halloween too! I grew up in one of those 50’s type neighborhoods where the houses all had at least 2 kids and the yards were right next to one another. Back in the day, once you were around 7 or so, you and your friends would walk from house to house without a grownup, with no fear of razor blades or anything. Only really greedy people drove in cars, since a kid could go through 2, maybe 3 neighborhoods, and get a TON of candy. I usually did my neighborhood and the adjacent neighborhood and that was plenty in candy and walking.
Living in CT, some nights would be cold or rainy and I hated that since the costume was lost in favor of a coat. We hardly wore store bought costumes and would think up our own.One year, I wore my Dad’s old work clothes, burnt a cork to rub on my face for a beard and went as a hobo, complete with stick and bundle.
Now, a real candy junkie like me, knows that the sour patch kid cleanses your palate after the heavy chocolate. Of course, back in the day, those hadn’t been invented yet. The thing we hated getting were apples or raisins. People could still give out homemade items, but since our moms made homemade treats, those weren’t even special to us…the commercial stuff rocked our little worlds. And again, we didn’t worry about someone getting us back for being little monsters the week prior, when we would ring doorbells, soap windows or toilet paper a house…doing our tricking to the neighbors who were not nice during the year. The bigger boys told of putting dog poo in paper bags, lighting the bag and then waiting, no hoping, that the home owner would come out in stocking feet and stomp on the bag. Too commando for me and my girls, we were just kids. Love the memories!

Actually there were lots of Super Girls in Northern WI! They just had turtle necks and tights on too 🙂
